On February 24, Dunkin' Donuts started to sell avocado toast in its restaurants. One slice of the toast costs $2.99. The avocado spread contains avocado, sea salt, black pepper and lemon juice. It's placed on a toasted slice of sourdough bread. The slice of toast is then topped with a dash of the restaurant's "everything" bagel seasoning. Nutrition experts are hailing this new option as healthy, tasty and a great choice for people who are on-the-go.

Few Vegan Options Are Available At Fast Food Establishments

Another benefit of the Dunkin' Donuts avocado toast is that it is vegan. Few fast food establishments have any vegan choices. No animal products are used in any part of the toast.

Good Nutritional Content

When a person thinks of nutritious food, fast food establishments are usually at the bottom of the list. This option puts Dunkin' Donuts in a good position to attract people who are trying to lead healthier lifestyles. One slice of the avocado toast has 240 calories. It has 11 grams of total fat, including 1.5 grams of saturated fat. There are six grams of dietary fiber and one gram of added sugars. One slice of the toast contains six grams of protein and 34 grams of carbohydrates. It is a little high in sodium, with 530 milligrams per slice. Compared to a plain bagel with cream cheese, a person choosing the avocado toast would consume 180 fewer calories, 290 fewer milligrams of sodium, 6.5 fewer grams of saturated fat, 34 fewer grams of carbohydrates and 10 fewer grams of added sugar. The avocado toast has two more grams of fiber than the plain bagel with cream cheese.

Why There Is a Need for Healthy, On-the-go Breakfast Options

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic caused a lot of people to start working from home, many are still on the front lines. For others, work has been business as usual. Many people find that their schedules are busier than ever due to increased obligations with family and fewer outside resources. There is still a high need for nutritious foods that are easy to eat while running errands. For people who have irregular schedules or who live alone and don't have the time or inclination to cook breakfast, the availability of an affordable, nutritious breakfast that tastes good and is easy to access is a big convenience for their lives.

Other Nutritious and Fast Breakfast Options to Try

If you need to visit a fast food restaurant for breakfast, there are some other healthy options you can try. If avocado toast isn't your thing, egg bites are a good option. Egg bites are cooked sous vide style. They can be made with whole eggs or just the egg whites. They typically include cheese, and some include a meat or vegetable, such as spinach or bacon. Hard-boiled eggs are also an option at some fast food restaurants. An egg white veggie sandwich or grilled egg white breakfast meal is a good option, and several national chains offer this. If you like a heartier breakfast that sticks to your stomach, try steel-cut oats with fresh fruit and nuts or chia seeds. You could also get a smoothie that includes almond or dairy milk, protein powder or seeds and fresh fruit or veggies.

How to Make Your Morning Beverage More Nutritious

If you like the coffee confections created at popular national chain coffeehouses and independent coffee shops, you're probably consuming a lot of added sugar and saturated fat. However, you don't have to totally skip the coffee every day. Instead of going for the chilled confections with the syrups and whipped topping, choose an iced coffee with half and half instead. Almond milk is another good option instead of a whole dairy creamer. Cut back on the amount of syrup or sugar you add to the coffee. A 10-ounce black coffee with a 1-ounce splash of unsweetened almond milk will only contain about 10 calories and 1 gram of fat. If you prefer hot tea in the morning, skip the honey or sugar, or at least decrease how much of it you use. Almond milk goes well with black tea. A squirt of lemon juice is also a great option. As an added benefit, the lemon juice contains vitamin C. This will give your immune system a boost, which is especially important during the winter months of the year.
