SNAP Benefits Are Going Up for 2027: What Families Need to Know

Millions of Americans on food assistance are getting a small boost this fall.

The USDA published its fiscal year 2027 cost-of-living adjustments, which took effect on October 1, 2026.

How Much Are Benefits Increasing?

The maximum benefit depends on your household size and where you live.

A family of four can now receive up to $1,023 a month, up from $994.

That's an extra $29 a month, or $348 over a full year (my own arithmetic).

Larger households see gains too.

The eight-person maximum rises from $1,789 to $1,841.

Key Numbers at a Glance

  • Family of four (48 states and D.C.): $1,023 maximum, with the minimum benefit rising to $25.
  • Guam, family of four: $1,507 maximum.
  • Housing costs: The maximum excess shelter deduction rises to $769 for the 48 states and D.C.
  • Homeless shelter deduction: $205.66 across all areas.

Prices Vary Outside the Mainland

Costs differ by region, so benefits do too.

For a family of four, the maximum ranges from $1,306 to $2,027, depending on location.

Hawaii Is the Exception

Not everyone is seeing an increase. In Hawaii, the maximum for a family of four will decrease to $1,655.

Why Do Benefits Change Every Year?

The adjustment is tied to what groceries actually cost.

The maximum benefit follows the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan, a market basket estimate for nutritious, low-cost meals.

USDA calculates that cost for a four-person family each June and uses it to set maximums for other household sizes.

Will You Get the Maximum?

Probably not, and that's an important caveat.

The USDA calculates a household's actual allotment partly from its net income.

For context:

  • The average recipient received $187.48 in May 2026.
  • The average household received $344.51 that month.

What Hasn't Changed

Work rules from 2025 still apply.

Requirements for adults ages 55 to 64, and parents whose youngest child is 14 or older, remain in effect for fiscal year 2027.

How Long Do the New Amounts Last?

The new levels stay in effect from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.

What Should You Do Next?

The increase applies automatically, but check your own numbers.

Each household should ask its state SNAP agency how the adjustment affects its specific benefit.
